I have run school teams for well over 20 years but youth football is a new departure for me. However, my
approach to both remains the same. I see myself as a ‘facilitator’ rather than a ‘coach’; an enthusiast not
an expert. My aim is to support the broader Club aim of providing ‘football opportunities’ and my aspirations
for the players in the team are very simple: we play to enjoy the game and to be the best we can be. As a
team sport football demands a team ethic within which each player’s best potential can develop. My fervent
hope is that in 30 year’s time all the players will have maintained their enthusiasm for activity and will still
be actively engaged in sport, either as participant or coach or preferably both! We play to win but not at all
costs and team selection reflects the intention to provide opportunity for all not just a select ‘eleven’. If the
players can reflect at the end of the season that they have improved then I believe we will have won more
games than we will have lost.
